Homegrown Music is a radio series originated and produced by George Graham, and broadcast on WVIA-FM 89.9, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre/Hazleton, PA. (Tuesdays at 9:00 PM) The series presents regional artists in performances produced at the WVIA-FM studios. The emphasis is on original music by artists who offer something distinctive and away from the commercial pop mainstream. The series has presented new music virtually every week since 1976, with over 500 different individuals and groups featured. Since 1982, the series has also presented monthly live in-studio concerts broadcasts performed before an audience. Styles presented are wide-ranging, running from blues to acoustic folk to mainstream jazz to electronic to Renaissance-era music. Artists ranging from up-and-coming local groups to veteran national performers like the Pousette-Dart Band have made appearances on the series, providing a unique listening experience to the Public Radio audience, while giving musicians a one-of-a-kind forum to present their music free from commercial considerations.
